Theatrical Rigging with Air Casters - Jan 04, 2004

Theatrical Rigging with Air Bearings

Aeris Corporation: A major Mid-West Convention Center elected to use Air Casters to move portable seating sections weighing up to 22,000 pounds and up to 20 foot tall from the storage facility to the main floor area. Seating layouts changed dramatically depending upon the type of show including concerts, ice hockey, basketball or public events. Since shows changed from day to day especially on the weekends, it was critical that up to 14 large seating sections be completely rearranged in less than two hours with a minimal crew. Two Air Bearing transporters with built-in 8 inch lift tables easily met the challenge.

Each steel transporter is powered by a single portable electric 170 SCFM rotary screw compressor mounted on a wheeled cart for optimal flexibility. The operation includes a 100 foot long main air supply hose with quick disconnects attached to the inlet console. The transporter is manually pushed under the seating section center frame via no-load wheels, the lift table is activated lifting the seating supports 2 inches off the floor, and the Air Bearings are inflated. Once floatation is achieved the complete seating section is moved with four workers to its final destination in the main arena, where two shot pins are inserted into floor receptacles for precise alignment. At this stage the Air Bearings and lift table are deactivated and the transporters are then remove from underneath the seating section. The process is repeated until completion of the job.
br> Air Bearings are manufactured in diameters ranging from 12 to 60 inches and can transport loads from 200 pounds up to thousands of tons. They require only 3- 5 pounds of effort per 1000 pounds of weight on a standard smooth, sealed concrete floor surface. Once floating the Air Bearings provide omni directional capability for total flexibility within the facility, optimization of floor space, reduce labor hours to transport loads, and improved quality and safety while preventing any floor damage. Aeris Corporation manufactures standard as well as custom designed systems including individual Air Bearing load modules, planks, pallets, roll-movers, turntables, and power driven steel transporters.
